Which Type of SLA Battery Does Your Business Need?

SLA batteries on a shelf

Sealed Lead Acid (SLA) batteries power a wide range of commercial applications, from fire and security systems to UPS backups, emergency lighting, and even solar power. However, many people don't realize that there are different types of SLA batteries, each with its own performance capabilities and uses. Understanding the differences between general-purpose, deep-cycle, gel, and high-rate SLA batteries can help you get the best value for your energy dollars by ensuring you're using the right battery for the job.

What are General-Purpose SLA Batteries?

As the name suggests, general-purpose SLA batteries are the most versatile of the four types, used in a variety of applications. They provide an affordable, reliable option for both backup and cycling operations. At Batteries Plus, we offer a range of general-purpose batteries designed with Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) technology, allowing them to perform well in a wide range of temperatures.

Best Uses: Fire and security systems, UPS battery backups, sump pumps and emergency lighting.

Use Deep-Cycle Batteries for Motors, Solar Applications and More

AGM deep-cycle batteries are built to deliver consistent power over an extended period. Unlike general-purpose batteries, they have thicker lead plates, allowing them to discharge down to 20% and still perform well. This means a deep-cycle battery lasts much longer before needing a recharge.

Why They're Great

Deep-cycle batteries also have a much longer lifespan than general-purpose ones. On average, they offer 40% more cycles, so you'll need to replace them far less often. Batteries Plus has the deep-cycle batteries you need for any of the applications below.

Best Uses: Floor scrubbers, trolling motors, Marine & RV house power, solar applications and motorized vehicles like wheelchairs, scooters and golf carts.

High-Rate UPS Batteries Have Long Lifespans

High-rate batteries, also known as high-rate discharge batteries, are built with more lead plates than other SLA batteries, and those plates are thinner. This, combined with the absorbed glass mat separators allows them to deliver large amounts of energy quickly over short periods.

Why They're Great

Thinner plates create room for more lead plates, which increases the total surface area of the active electrode material. This larger surface area enhances the chemical reaction with the electrolyte (sulfuric acid). This results in a battery that can quickly deliver substantial amounts of energy to the application when needed.

With lifespans of up to ten years and minimal maintenance needs, they're perfect for emergency equipment and backup applications. Keep in mind, though, that due to their design, high-rate SLA batteries aren't suitable for deep discharge applications. Shop high-rate UPS batteries at Batteries Plus.

Best Uses: Data centers, server banks, emergency medical equipment, telecom applications and UPS/battery backups.

Use Gel Batteries for Heavy Deep Cycling Operations

Gel batteries are very similar to flooded batteries with the exception of the electrolytes. Gel batteries use a combination of sulfuric acid and silica to turn the electrolyte into a thick gel mixture instead of a free-flowing liquid sulfuric acid electrolyte. This thicker electrolyte reduces the amount of fumes the battery emits, making it ideal for applications with limited ventilation.

Why They're Great

Gel batteries are the best choice for deep cycling operations that require heavy discharges. One of the biggest advantages of gel batteries is their superior ability to withstand deep discharges and high-heat conditions compared to flooded or AGM batteries. They also charge more easily and last up to twice as long as a flooded deep-cycle battery. While they do cost a bit more than traditional deep-cycle batteries, the longer lifespan can be worth the investment.

Note: Gel batteries have lower recharge voltages, making them more prone to overcharging. It's crucial to use the right charger to avoid damaging or even ruining your battery. Check out Batteries Plus' selection of gel batteries for your business needs.

Best Uses: Heavy use wheelchairs, wind, solar and communications applications.
