You see the term "MagSafe" everywhere, but what exactly is it? MagSafe is a proprietary technology developed by Apple for magnetic connections between devices and accessories. MagSafe was initially referred to as the magnetic charging connector used on MacBook laptops. However, Apple introduced the MagSafe connection for the iPhone in 2020 with the release of the iPhone 12 series.
How Does MagSafe Work?
MagSafe works through the use of magnets and a specially designed magnetic array in the back of the phone. MagSafe accessories have complementary magnets that align with the magnets in the iPhone. When you bring a MagSafe accessory close to the back of the phone, the magnets in the accessory and in the iPhone attract each other, causing them to snap into place. The alignment is precise, thanks to the magnet array, ensuring that the accessory is centered correctly.
When you use a MagSafe charger with your iPhone, the charger has a coil that generates an electromagnetic field. When the MagSafe accessory is attached to the iPhone, the magnets align the coil in the accessory with the coil in the iPhone. This alignment allows for an efficient transfer of power from the charger to the iPhone, enabling seamless wireless charging.
MagSafe also supports communication between the iPhone and any MagSafe accessory. This allows the iPhone to recognize the type of accessory attached, like a charger, wallet or case, and adjust its behavior accordingly. For example, if a MagSafe charger is connected, the iPhone can display the charging status on the screen or optimize the charging parameters for the best charging experience.
What iPhones Does MagSafe Work With?
The introduction of MagSafe for iPhone was with the iPhone 12 series (12, 12 Mini, 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max). Apple now includes MagSafe on all of their numbered iPhone models after that. The SE models do not contain the MagSafe technology.
